Christmas Holiday Daredevils

The snow fell softly, silently,
blanketing the town before daybreak;
it was deep enough to sledge in – and lose a boot;
out the window, a march had already begun,
street kids trailing sledges and inner tubes from old tractor tyres,
towards the hills of the golf course and their hills;
the walk took us past the bare hedgerows,
showing the families already there;
a dad and daughter skimming down on a black binliner,
and some of the older lads on an old car bonnet
spinning every which way.

At the entrance, scrambling over stile,
I was ready to tackle the hill,
dodging bodies to reach the top and the quick queue,
quicker than I’d ever seen;
it was tradition to share the first trip down with Ni;
he handled the steering, as we sped in a bullet-straight line,
all the way to the bottom,
so we went again and again and again – together and apart,
until my final solo descent, which was
headfirst, full of fear and peer pressure;
I almost made it until I ate a wedge of snow, hurting my arm;
one of the car bonnet boys had to pull me out of the way,
as the dad and daughter sped past my feet, binliner shredded to pieces,
their fun finished as well;
my brother left to trail the sledge
as we laughed all the way home;
full of childhood adrenaline, arctic air
and last night’s snow.

Advent Calendar Haiku #20

It’s the final countdown until Christmas. Santa and his elves are busy working away in the toy factory and the holiday armadillo is trying to keep things together…

I still haven’t wrapped my presents yet but I’ll get round to it. Have you wrapped your non-North Pole gifts yet?

Todays haiku…

The jingle bells ring
every time the Christmas tree’s touched;
fairy lights dancing.

Thanks for joining me today, maybe enjoy a foil-wrapped chocolate as a treat or a mug of hot chocolate. Remember to come back tomorrow for day twenty-one.

Take It Easy,

Paul

Advent Calendar Haiku #19

Welcome to day nineteen of the Haiku Advent Calendar. I hope you’re all well. The days are going by too quickly.

I’ve donned a Christmas jumper to take part in the regular writing group I attend today so I’m festive and warm, like a good mulled wine or cider.

Now for today’s haiku…

Starlings murmur like
prudes gossiping on bare trees;
the air is frozen.

Thanks for reading and joining me today. If you missed it I was part of the cast of the Christmas Episode of Eat The Storms Poetry Podcast yesterday if you want something to listen to today. The Spotify link is below;

Advent Calendar Haiku #18

On day eighteen of the Haiku Advent Calendar, my true love gave to me – oh sorry I got a little mixed up there!!!

I’ve only got two presents left to buy and they’re both going to be bought online. What a relief. I still need to wrap though.

Today’s haiku is…

The low winter sun
shines on the decorations;
the tree lights have fused.

Hope you all have a great weekend. I’m appearing on the Christmas Episode of Eat The Storms Poetry Podcast at 5pm (GMT) so keep an eye out for more on that later.

Advent Calendar Haiku #17

It’s day seventeen of the Haiku Advent Calendar. That means only seven days until Christmas Eve.

My house is filled with the scent of my tree, clementine and wrapping paper. I’ve had Magic TV on for all the old festive tunes.

Here’s a haiku witnessed from the comfort of my kitchen;

lethal black ice
harshly tripping up school kids;
torn Christmas jumpers.

Join me again tomorrow for another haiku as part of the Haiku Advent Calendar.

Advent Calendar Haiku #16

Welcome to day sixteen of the Haiku Advent Calendar. How is everyone?

Have you bought all your gifts? Or are you shopping over the last weekend before Christmas?

Today’s haiku …

in moonlit snowfall,
carolers sang ‘Silent Night’;
footprints lost to time.

Thanks for joining me today. I hope you’re enjoying the Advent Calendar, and, can join me again tomorrow.

Advent Calendar Haiku #15

Happy Wednesday and Haiku Advent Calendar day fifteen to you. Hope you’re well and into the Christmas spirit. I know that I am.

Yesterday, apart from my Haiku, I also shared my poem ‘At Christmas’. That might help you get in your groove.

Today’s haiku is…

Melting icicles
fall like arrows to earth;
magpies scared silent.

Thanks for joining me today and remember to come back tomorrow for another day of the Haiku Advent Calendar.

At Christmas

Christmas is my time of year
I can get drunk on the scents of clementine and clove
I like to sing along with Bing & Bowie, Wizzard & Wham
dance around the tree tryIng not to trip
over well-wrapped gifts and tins of roses
I get hypnotised by the shimmering of baubles
against twinkling lights and tinsel
every year I sit and lose myself in the magic of the snowman
like it’s my first time seeing it.

Get me round the table on Christmas day
pulling crackers with prizes I never win
a toast and then a race for the pigs in blankets
and last roast potato
smiles of happiness, wine and champagne
from all the faces,
leaves the best taste.

Does it really matter to you,
if the odd day, my breakfast is Bucks Fizz, coco pops and orange matchmakers
and afternoon hot chocolates
sometimes have Bailey’s in, sometimes not?
We celebrate in our own ways.

I’ve always enjoyed Christmas
ever since I watched letters with burnt edges
float up the chimney as a child
when Dudley Moore was a runaway elf
and presents spilled from tree to settee
and the whole family was happy and together.

Christmas is my time of year
let’s celebrate together
all in our own ways.

Thanks for taking the time to read my poem.

Advent Calendar Haiku #14

Welcome back to the Haiku Advent Calendar on day fourteen.

I can’t believe it’s only ten days until Christmas Eve. Time is racing, so I won’t waste another second.

Today’s haiku is…

holly berries glow,
giving warmth to winter;
snow hiding thick ice

Come back tomorrow for another festive seasonal haiku as part of the Advent Calendar.

Advent Calendar Haiku #13

Welcome to day thirteen of the Haiku Advent Calendar and the start of a fresh week.

I hope you’re weekend was fun, we put up the tree, had some mulled wine and mince pies and watched an episode of Only Fools and Horses. Cushty!!!

Today’s haiku is…

We startled the doe,
boots crunching through frozen leaves;
tender snowflakes fall.

Thanks and remember to come back tomorrow for your next installment of the Haiku Advent Calendar.
